Benefits of Cultural Exchange Programs

A graduate of Providence College, Anthony Cosentino, Putnam resident, holds a master of arts in history. He is currently a teacher of social studies and sociology at Woonsocket High School. Anthony Cosentino, a Putnam local firefighter, created the Global Citizenship Club that opened the door for cultural exchanges between the Woonsocket community and Rwanda.

Cultural exchange can benefit both the countries and universities that create the programs and the students that have the chance to travel, study abroad and learn about new cultures. A cultural exchange program can make a student gain more knowledge and awareness of global issues. In this way, a student can learn a new language and understand the way in which other cultures and nations function, which can create a better understanding of their own culture.

Students that go on to study abroad have a boost of self-esteem and self-confidence and can learn to appreciate their home, family, and friends better than they did before. Going to study abroad means leaving their comfort zone which can make a person be more comfortable in foreign places and adapt to situations faster.
